Artist Books
The book format offers an appropriate formal space for the dynamic processes I am interested in: two symmetrical pages that oppose and face each other yet come together to a shared structure; a space to unfold, perhaps separate, juxtapose, integrate and mediate; objects expressive of their content that have to be used, interacted with by an audience. The inclusion of the viewer is integral to format and tradition of the book structure. The viewer becomes part of the synergy of 2D and 3D parts completing them to a 4D experience. The intimacy of a book seems appropriate for offering up the open ended, unresolved and perhaps difficult processes I am exploring.
Typically, my books accompany other bodies of work. "All of Us" and "Life in the Time..." accompany thoughts about the pandemic. "Peace Pending" and "Pax Omnibus Res", "In War 1940 - "address angles of world conflict from World War II to the cold war to beyond. "Fat Little Book" is about abundance and neglect , the central theme of my "Heartland" drawing series. "Mix&Match" and "Homo Sapiens Sapiens" look at racism as it is anchored in our language and accompany the installation "Dis-Memberment and Re-Membering". “German/Jew" "Heimat", "pushmepullyou", "Obituaries", "wit(h)ness"and “Open My/Your Wound” accompany “The Jewish/German Dialogue Project” in which I address my dual identity as a Jew and a German.

The casts are made from couched sheets that are laid tightly onto the plaster surface. Sheets are formed from a white base layer with embedded twine and a layer of tea stained stencils on each side. The sheets are pressed before applying stencil to second side. Sheets are pressed again after second side is stenciled with text. They are then laid onto plaster cast and pressed firmly onto it’s surface.
Four sets of half portraits (left and right side of head) are cast for the entire book. The embedded twine is used for assembling the book structure at the back of the head through braids.
